We Tested the Shure SLX-D kit - Is It Worth It?

Aug 21,2024 | Pinknoisesystems

The Shure SLX-D Range

We tested the Shure SLX-D Bodypack and transmitter during a video and here are our thoughts.

The Shure SLX-D portable system is an excellent choice for those venturing into the world of Digital UHF wireless technology. With impressive sound reproduction, solid range, and a user-friendly form factor, it’s particularly appealing for beginner users or those familiar with the G series wireless systems.

Key Highlights

The Shure SLX-D portable system delivers fantastic audio quality, offering a top-notch sound that stands out even among higher-end models. Its reliable performance is evident in challenging environments, ensuring a strong and consistent connection over a good range. Power management is a breeze, as the system utilizes standard AA batteries, providing up to 8 hours of operation from just two batteries. Additionally, the setup process is straightforward, thanks to its intuitive design that includes IR sync and group-based scanning, making it easy for users to get started quickly and efficiently.

We used the Shure SLX-D15 kit for recording and testing.

Below are some of the listed specs :

  • Transparent 24-bit digital audio
  • Extended 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency range
  • 44 MHz tuning bandwidth (region dependent)
  • 32 available channels per frequency band (region dependent)
  • Powerful, portable digital wireless receiver for on-camera cold shoe mounting and audio bag use
  • Dual 1/8” outputs including a headphone monitor out and switchable line/mic output

Performance and Usability

Alex our Sales Manager talking through the Shure SLX-D features.

The SLX-D delivers exceptional audio quality, comparable to the Sennheiser UWP-D series. While it may have slightly less dynamic range, the difference is nearly invisible. In the sub-£1000 digital wireless category, the SLX-D stands out.

In terms of range, the SLX-D performs admirably. During tests in various environments, including an office, field and car park, the system maintained a stable connection at distances ranging from 50 to 100 meters. While large vehicles can occasionally disrupt the signal, the overall performance remains consistent.

The form factor is familiar to users of G series wireless systems. Setup is straightforward, thanks to the IR sync function and group-based scanning. Powering the unit is simple, as it uses standard AA batteries, with lithium batteries recommended for optimal performance.

Kit Breakdown

Breakdown of the kit we used for filming.

Here's the breakdown of the kit we used during filming: the Shure SLX-D1 Bodypack Transmitter for seamless wireless transmission, the Shure SLX-D5 Portable Receiver for stable and reliable signal reception, and the Shure TL-48 Twinplex Subminiature Lavalier Microphone with a TA4f connection, delivering crystal-clear audio.

Final Thoughts

The Shure SLX-D portable system is a robust, entry-level solution for location sound professionals. It offers a competitive price point, with the base unit (excluding a microphone) available at £636.00 (including VAT).

So, YES! We would recommend the Shure SLX-D .For those seeking a complete kit, an option including a Sanken COS-11 is offered at £870.00 (including VAT). This positions the SLX-D between the older 112p and 512p Sennheiser kits in terms of price, making it an attractive option for those seeking quality without breaking the bank.
